Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been appointed to India’s 15-man roster for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, a significant step in the team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup. While Kohli, the previous captain, was rested for the just finished West Indies series, Rahul returns after a lengthy absence due to a groyne injury that needed surgery as well as a Covid-positive diagnosis.
Deepak Hooda has been retained as a middle-order option at the cost of Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, while Ravi Bishnoi has been chosen as the squad’s second wrist-spinning option.
With Jasprit Bumrah (back) and Harshal Patel (side) injured, India will enter the multi-team competition in the UAE with only three frontline fast-bowling options in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Avesh Khan, with Hardik Pandya functioning as the fast-bowling all-rounder.
The BCCI has announced the India squad for the Asia Cup 2022
On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022. Rohit Sharma will head Team India in the mega event, which is due to begin on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Asia Cup 2022 final will be held on September 11 in Dubai.
On August 28, India’s campaign in this year’s tournament will begin with a heavyweight encounter against archrival Pakistan. The Men in Blue want to avenge their setback in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and establish their dominance in the preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which will be held later this year in Australia.
The following players have been named to the India squad for the Asia Cup 2022: Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (Wk), Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik (Wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ars
Backups include Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, and Axar Patel.
Ishan Kishan, who played in the fifth T20I against the West Indies, is among those who did not make the 15-man squad. That means India will most likely have only Rishabh Pant as a left-hander in their top-five, with Ravindra Jadeja coming in later.
Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, who had a productive return to T20I cricket against the West Indies, is one of four spinning options for captain Rohit Sharma, who also has Yuzvendra Chahal, Bishnoi, and Jadeja. That means Axar Patel, who has recently appeared, particularly in Jadeja’s absence, is relegated to the bench. Deepak Chahar joins the standby list after not playing in a competitive game since February 20 due to hamstring and back problems.
